Commercial Loan Underwriter I, II, or III DOE - North Phoenix, AZ

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This position will provide support to all commercial lending teams within the organization and will assist with monitoring and servicing its new and existing credit relationships. Provide expertise in underwriting, structuring, servicing and documenting new and renewal credits. Responsible for identifying, gathering and analyzing relevant information to assess credit risk, establish viability of sources of repayment and determine appropriate loan structures. Review and analyze the creditworthiness of all commercial loan originations, prepare written credit memorandums for presentation and approval, loan covenant monitoring, risk rating, stress testing and audit preparation. Provide quality member service, including participation in joint calls with members, as needed. Maintain a thorough knowledge of credit union policy, operating procedures and both Federal and State rules and regulations to ensure that safety and soundness is preserved.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze the financial condition and creditworthiness of businesses and individuals

  • Evaluate the quality and sufficiency of the collateral and sources of repayment

  • Assess the credit structures for a new loan and renewal request and recommend risk ratings

  • Partner with Relationship Officer to obtain all necessary financial and other documentation to underwrite a loan and move it through the approval process

  • Contact internal/external members and other parties as appropriate to gather information and to clarify inconsistent, incorrect or missing information

  • Prepare written credit request memorandums of loan terms and conditions on varying loan types and amounts, explaining business background, outlining risk factors and justifying assigned risk rating, ensure conformity with credit union policy and procedures and participate in presentations to the approving authorities as needed

  • Ensure that credit request memorandums are accurate, thorough and prepared in a timely manner

  • Act as control point in the loan approval process to ensure adherence to credit union procedures, credit policies and loan covenants

  • Collaborate with Relationship Officers to assist in negotiating loan terms and follow up on information required to decision the application

  • Assist Relationship Officers and Loan Operations staff in loan closing activities.

  • Monitors existing commercial loan portfolio and provides collection efforts on delinquent accounts

  • Provide post-funding analytical and monitoring support of credit relationships and portfolio maintenance, as needed

  • Assists with audits and credit examinations, portfolio and borrower stress testing, and risk rating reviews

  • Identifies and/or confirms all external regulatory requirements and ensures all internal policies/procedures are followed

  • Makes recommendations on credit decisions or makes credit decisions directly, as appropriate

  • Review leases, rent rolls, construction contracts, appraisals, environmental assessment reports, UCC searches, flood determinations, insurance policies and other information to assess risks associated with credit unions collateral position

  • Perform periodic reviews of existing credits and support management of the assigned portfolio to identify and minimize risk to the credit union

  • Assist in training Credit Analysts and Commercial Loan Underwriters as necessary

  • Coach and/or review the work of other analysts and underwriters

  • Performs other duties and special projects as needed

Education and/or experience:

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university, in finance or related field with 2 - 3 years’ experience in commercial lending. Must have experience with cash flow analysis, ratio analysis and projections. Proven ability in commercial lending including, but not limited to, term loans, commercial real estate, and lines of credit.
