Commercial Loan Underwriter I - North Phoenix, AZ

Summary: Maintains business member relations. Provides information on credit union business products and services to current and potential business members according to all credit union policies and procedures and both Federal and State rules and regulations. Performs analysis of financial statements, cash flows, and tax returns to evaluate the financial position of the borrower and/or guarantor(s). Maintains a thorough knowledge of credit union policy and operating procedures. Demonstrates the ability to liaison between multiple credit union departments. Operates within credit authority. Examines, evaluates, prepares Credit Requests and authorizes or recommends approval of member applications for business loans by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Handles non-complex loan underwriting, renewals, and annual reviews on portfolio and participated loans to determine ongoing value and risk; makes recommendations to credit authority.

  • Interviews members requesting refinance or loan re-write

  • Gathers background information on members applying for business loans by interviewing applicants and obtaining needed financial exhibits. Assists members with the loan applications process as needed.

  • Ensures that sound analysis and lending procedures are followed.

  • Negotiates terms and conditions

  • Acts in compliance with the credit union's Business Lending policies and procedures at all times.

  • Ensures that all NCUA, ASBD, and credit union policies and procedures are followed.

  • Cross-sells lending and other credit union products and services.

  • Facilitates and reviews prepared loan documentation vs. requirements; assists borrower in loan closing.

  • Review commercial loan applications and analyze credit information to make a general assessment of applicant’s creditworthiness. Determine whether or not the proposed loan will conform to the credit union’s lending policy.

  • Interact with account officers to negotiate loan terms and follow up on information required to decision the application. May contact loan applicants (customers) and their representatives (CPA’s, CFO’s) to obtain clarification about information received from them. Respond to credit applications within the timeframe established by the department.

  • Develop an understanding of Credit Union philosophy, organization, bylaws, and operational procedures and comply with the requirements of the Bank Secrecy Act, AML, OFAC and all other applicable State and Federal Financial Institution Regulations.


Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree, from four-year college or university, in finance or related field with 18 - 36 months experience in commercial lending. Proven ability in commercial lending including lines of credit, term loans and commercial real estate lending.
